Ward 8 Commissioner Salim Adofo issued a public statement urging the D.C. Council to pass the Economic Opportunity and Empowerment Act, calling it a vital step toward building a fairer and more inclusive local economy.
Commissioner Adofo highlighted key benefits of the proposed legislation, which would ensure that hard-working drivers, like all other service professionals in the District, have the right to work for themselves and determine their own worth, while at the same time increasing public safety and access to affordable transportation.
After consulting with residents and fellow commissioners, Commissioner Adofo expressed strong support for the legislation, citing key benefits for drivers, riders, and the District as a whole.
“This legislation offers a unique opportunity to reimagine the transportation ecosystem through the lens of equity, transparency, and community ownership,” said Adofo.
Adofo concluded by calling on the D.C. Council to take action on the legislation now: “It empowers workers, protects consumers, and puts control back in the hands of D.C. residents.”
