Rideshare Drivers Working for Themselves Using Empower’s Software Have Earned $100 Million

Over 15,000 Drivers in D.C. Alone Have Provided 6 Million+ Rides

Washington, D.C. – Uber disruptor Empower announced today that rideshare drivers using its software and services to work for themselves have earned over $100 million. Unlike drivers who work for Uber, drivers using Empower set their own rates and get 100% of their fares.

“If drivers want to work for a company like Uber that pays them for providing rides, they should have that option.  But they should also have the option to work for themselves and compete head-to-head with larger companies like Uber. The overwhelming evidence shows that when they choose the latter, both drivers and riders are better off,” said Empower CEO Joshua Sear.

That is why the number of riders booking rides from drivers who choose to work for themselves has more than doubled this year. Drivers using Empower are currently providing 70,000 rides per week, or over 10% of all rideshare rides taken by D.C. area residents. In total, more than 15,000 drivers using Empower have provided over 6 million rides to 250,000 D.C. area residents.

Sear added, “We are excited that drivers working for themselves with our software and support have now earned over $100 million. Empower stands with drivers and is working hand-in-hand with them to ensure their right to work for themselves is protected.”

About Empower

Empower is disrupting companies like Uber with an innovative mode. With Empower, drivers are neither employees nor contractors; they’re customers. Drivers set their own rates, keep 100% of the fare and pay the company a subscription fee. Under this model, drivers are making thousands of dollars more per month than they do working for Uber, which pays them only about 50% of what riders pay to Uber.

And because drivers get 100% of the fare, riders save money too, as drivers are able to charge them 15-20% less, on average, than Uber charges, while still making considerably more money. Riders can also request a same-gender or favorite driver, which many riders indicate provides them with a greater sense of safety.
